In addition to instruction on strategy and tactics, he will give a brief introduction to the modern computer resources.

Chuck has been playing and studying backgammon for more than 30 years. He is a frequent contributor to national newsletters and Internet magazines on the intricacies of the game. He has won several singles and doubles competitions, including the Open Division of the 2002 Michigan Summer Championship, the Open Consolation at the 2006 Pittsburgh Championship, and the 2008 Illinois State Championship Doubles. GREEN GARDENING
From the victory garden at the White House to author Michael Pollan on Oprah, conversations of local food and gardening are receiving national attention. Oxford University Press voted “locavore” word of the year in 2007, and Slow Food USA has seen membership more than double in 2009. “Organic” and “sustainable” have become common household words, along with “grass-fed” and “free-range.” In Indianapolis, farmers markets are bustling year round, and a project to create a 6,000 sq. ft. vegetable garden at White River State Park was awarded $10,000 in the 2009 Spirit & Place Pecha Kucha competition. All in all, we are experiencing a cultural revolution in how we think about food, food systems and where our food comes from in Indianapolis and across the U.S.

METALSMITHING
“Under the spreading chestnut tree, the village smithy stand.” Pick up a hammer and hear the anvil ring!!! Metal Artist Bonnie Wynn Ramirez will introduce you to the joys of hammering and twisting glowing-hot steel into a piece of art. You’ll learn basic metalsmithing techniques and leave with your own piece of forged steel.

Middle-aged grandmother, Bonnie Ramirez, decided to have a “Mid-Life Emancipation” instead of a crisis. Trading her contractor’s hardhat for a welding torch, she went back to school thinking she might learn to” weld some metal stuff for the house.” Not only did she learn to weld, but she discovered her passion for fire could be channeled into artistic expression that would launch not only a new career but an amazing life experience. Almost accidentally, she began selling her work after completing her first Art Metals class; completely surprised at the requests she received for commissioned pieces in both the public and private sector. She also entered the unique world of Art Gallery Exhibitions, a strangely foreign and mystically exciting world with exotic inhabitants and it’s own language and religion.

After being the first woman to earn the Art Metals degree in Welding Technology at Austin Community College, Bonnie was hired by the college and taught Art Metals classes while earning a second interdisciplinary degree in Art and Applied Science From Texas State University. Bonnie also taught at Laguna Gloria, Austin Museum of Art, the Dougherty Art center and several other independent studios in Austin before relocating to Indiana to be near her children and grandchildren. The newly opened Flame Arts Studio in Indianapolis represents the inception of her desire to draw other “fire-y” artists into a supportive, cooperative community.

PAINTING
Art heals, informs, transforms and inspires. Come try your hand at painting nudes in pastels with Indiana legend, Nancy Noël. As a philanthropist and painter, she captures the essence of her subjects, depicting them with reverence that quiets the mind and comforts the heart. Noël’s timeless paintings describe a world both natural and mystical with a finesse that speaks directly to the soul.

Sensitive portraits of animals and Amish children made Noël a household name. The intimacy of the Amish children portrayed is not seen in mainstream American culture. In contrast, the African series demonstrates a unique versatility bringing us face to face with the haunting charisma of a diminishing culture. Nancy’s angelic messengers float ethereally on canvas, all asking the viewer to see beyond the paintings into another dimension; encouraging us closer to our divinity in celebration of who we are. Whether you have painted before or not – come learn the fundamentals of painting. Also, if you have that piece that you are stuck on or want critiqued – feel free to bring it to class.

RAFT RACING
Raft racing is an intense activity in which participants are sure to get wet! The participants will arrive on the far side of the lake by pontoon boat and will be left with the basic supplies needed to build a raft. The supplies may include 55-gallon drums, lumber of varying sizes and different lengths of rope, and perhaps a paddle or two. The task of the team is to construct a seaworthy raft capable of carrying the entire team across the lake in a single trip and arrive before the other teams. Using a 20-gauge shotgun, you will learn the parts of the firearm and the ammo, as well as how to point and shoot, pattern, and how to hit that elusive flying clay target. Depending on how good your shot is, you may progress to official trap shooting for a little friendly competition.

SPORTS DIALOGUE
Why It Matters (Even Though They Maybe Shouldn’t)
Indianapolis has made an enormous investment in sports over the last 30 years. Is it worth it? What should our priorities be? Why do we care so much about our teams? And will the inflationary spiral associated with sports ever cease? Indianapolis Business Journal sports columnist Bill Benner will discuss these issues and other topics and reflect on a career in sports journalism in Indianapolis that dates back to 1968. During that career, Benner covered the first basketball games at Market Square Arena and Conseco Fieldhouse, the first football games in the Hoosier Dome and Lucas Oil Stadium, the first baseball game at Victory Field, the first tennis match at the Indianapolis Sports Center and the first swim meet at the IU Natatorium. He’s also covered 30 Final Fours, three Olympic Games, two Pan American Games, numerous Masters and U.S. Opens and an incredible array of Indiana high school, college and professional sports. Benner can provide perspective on where we were, where we are and where we are going with our sports initiative.
